As a student nurse I worked at a hospital in London that was very old. There were lots of stories about ghosts, mainly involving grey ladies offering cups of tea to terminally ill people. If you took the tea then by morning you would have passed away. A few of my friends claimed to have had encounters, though I never did.
However I did have a strange experience on nights. I was working on a nightingale type ward (straight long room with beds on each side and nurses desk in the middle somewhere. There were two doors, one the front and main set of doors used by everyone and the back ones which led to some stairs. Out of the back door was a store room where dressings and the like were kept.
On this particular night I was on my own at the desk with my back to the back door. I heard the door open and swing a few times till it shut. There were a few footsteps then nothing. Expecting night sister, I looked round but no one was there. I guess someone might have started in the ward and changed their minds but I had a very strange feeling and am convinced to this day that something very odd was happening there.
I was young and impressionable and it was the middle of the night, but who knows?
