Thanks for the comment P/J; I had a suspicion that this problem would not get better the more "universal" health insurance becomes.

Some people here pay on their own, to be sure, but most have insurance of some sort.

But even if a procedure will be covered by insurance, I think we (and you) deserve to know what our insurance will be charged. Not allowing consumers to see this creates opportunities for fraud and eliminates the ability to comparison shop. It kills competition.
