There are so many shows about life in surgery. Why aren't nurses and surgical techs represented??? When I'm circulating and have to pick up my patient from the holding area, I like to give the patient and family a high level overview of my role. They are always so surprised at my job description. It would be nice to show people that nurses do play a role in assisting with complex procedures.

Interestingly, when my husband had his GB surgery, he had very little recollection of any nurses pre or post op. He doesn't even remember the very important conversation from the anesthesiologist! I think this is even more important - that OR nurses are shown in the right light on TV as few people remember what has happened to them!

The operative word here is right.

I hate ER.

I think a couple of shows do show nurses in the OR but I totally know what you mean. I think if we steer away from the "drama" TV shows and watch other TV shows like Situation Critical or other "real" TV shows there will be more OR nurses present. I think shows like Situation Critical really show what the situation is like, but I haven't watched it in a while so I'm not sure if OR nurses are present or not (it really depends on the situation).

The sad situation is that even other nurses do not know who and what OR are! Other nurses do not know the extent of our practice and it's importance in the patient advocacy realm!

Hell, some of the nurse I know still do not realize the full potential of their respective practice. So, if the public and other nurse allow TV shows to define OR nurses, then we as OR nurses are at fault.
