Ugh.
That's my opinion, P/J. I think this topic was discussed a bit earlier. People chimed in on both sides of the renal rally. I am not certain that any one of us changed the mind of any other of us. Was a good 'conversation,' though. I'll check back here during the week to read what all y'all have to say. Joy Last edited by LesleyJoy : 05-12-2008 at 08:17 AM. Reason: clarity |

I agree, no amount of money would make me sell!
My sister in law has been told she has 7% function in one kidney, and that has taken 4 years. if I wanted to give a kidney, I'd give it, but sell it; no thanks no money would be enough if I was in renal failure! |

Selling body parts for profit. Hmmm, let me see... shall I sell to the highest bidder, or should I sell to the family with no money and a big hospital bill? .......and what...if after I sell one of my kidneys I lose function in the other one and can't afford to buy one. Oh dear me, oh dear me. What to do, what to do?
I'm not sure I could sell to the highest bidder.....how would the world fare if only the rich can afford the organs?

What if you don't have a choice. You just agree to sell and who ever was the highest bidder gets it; or maybe a standard price?
Does anyone know much about transplants. We were discussing it and someone said that adults get only one transplant, if that fails then tough luck. While kids get three transplants.

I cannot speak to Australian medical practices or customs. In the USA, however, transplant eligibility is based upon organ availability, suitability of tissue match, and the health of the potential recipient. There is no limit or rationing of transplants based upon how few/many previous transplants may have been accomplished prior to the current need. Joy |

This is really a sticky question. I'm not in favor of selling human organs. It just doesn't seem right. Rich people go to the head of the line and poor people die while waiting for the leftovers. The whole thing is just a bit too Owellian for me.

I'd be too afraid of my remaining kidney failing. Or heaven forbid... that my child or family would need a kidney and I wouldn't have one to give them because I sold it to someone else. If I HAD to give/sell my kidney I'd at least want to pick who gets it. Which is actually in direct opposition to donating an organ after death... then I'm happy leaving it in the hands of the organ transplant professionals to decide who gets it. |
