I had a fun conversation with a group of nurses last week. We talked about the following scenario:

A nursing board official comes knocking at your door and tells you that the nursing school that you attended committed fraud, and that you aren’t really a nurse. They inform you that the only way for you to keep your nursing license is to go back to nursing school and take the boards all over again. What would you do?


Frankly, I’d tell them to kiss my butt and move to Florida with the rest of the old timers. I’m too old to go through all that heartache again. How would you handle the situation?

There's NO WAY I'd do it all again !! Truth is I wouldn't be able to cope with all the academia and philosophical / psychological / sociological essays required these days to qualify.
In my training - the doctor did all that and the nurse looked after the patient ! I am more a practical nurse than a theory one .

If I'd wanted to "talk a good game of golf " - I'd have become a politician !!
Think I would get a job where people were glad to see you - spoke nicely to you, gave you no grief , and then paid you !!............... a hairdresser !!

I don't know what I'd want to do if I couldn't be a nurse anymore. Maybe I'd finally have enough time to learn how to pole dance. Or maybe not. At my age, you have to be careful not to break a hip.

Women have so many opportunities that weren't available when I was young.

I'm with MJ on this one. I wouldn't go through all of that again, instead I'd do the backpacking I never did, or perhaps do a 'Shirley Valentine'

This happened to two of our universities last year. The courses were found to not have sufficient coverage of a particular element. This was because all courses are accredited by the state nursing board, no two courses are the same, but offer similar elements. The universities had changed their course without it being approved. All students from that year could not get registered as a nurse until they completed the required subject. One university offered to pay for the students, the other uni told students that they had to pay.

I thought that you all sat a test in the USA before registration? If you could pass that test obviously you know your stuff as a nurse.

You have to graduate from an approved school before you can sit for the boards. At least that's how it use to work. I've been away from nursing school for a long time.

If you've already passed the NCLEX then I'd tell them to shove it. You already have your license so they shouldn't be able to take that away. Especially if you've been practicing as a nurse for years already. I can't imagine this really happening. There would be a huge uproar I would imagine.

Of note though, I was just talking to one of my coworkers this morning about how I'd love to go through nursing school again since now I actually would understand what the heck they are talking about. LOL. And I've been a nurse for 13+ years.
