I found this site, tonight, after being terminated!
I work in a Phila.,Pa hospital, university affiliated, that just obtained Magnet status. My divisional DON is a head case. Just after getting the DON position, she terminated her BFF, who was a clinical co-ordinator, of a Post-partum unit. She actually said to her BFF,"It's just work. We can still be friends". Arogant, huh! The other co-ordinator she fired had just lost her husband, to a heart attack, less than 3 months before. She terminated them because, she claims, they wouldn't "support her vision", I think I smell Osama Bin Laden! No one in the know,would take the co-ordinators job on my unit,who wants to work for a snake? Anyhow, the hospital finally gave the job to a night shift supervisor who wanted to come off of nights.What a disaster! She hasn't worked clinical nursing in 20 years and has never worked women's health! Then, I, unknowingly, angered the snakes' heir apparent.The heir then wrote me up, for falsification of a document! A nurse had not signed her name during a double check of a chemo order, so I, as per policy, signed her name and my initials, as per policy.When HR heard what the CC was trying to do to me, they told her "No way". So guess how they got me? They said I didn't follow policy and gave chemo without the necessary 2 signatures. The signature was missing in one place, but was present on the pharmacy verification sheet.The nurse who didn't sign the proper sheet stated she was at fault, not me! I even asked her if she signed everything and she said yes!When they presented my "error" to me, I was able to show how the heir 1).Did the same thing ie, gave chemo with a signature missing,and 2). I showed how she knowingly gave chemo too quickly, causing the pt. to have a hypotensive episode, and never put in an incident report about either event!I was told those events were none of my business, yet the heir laughed as I was being escorted off of the unit, by security.I know I'll get my job back, but sheesh! What a mess! I am an American with disability and my boss has a problem with my physical issues. The hospital hired me knowing of my condition. In 6 years, I have never been disciplined for anything, other than loss of time.I will file a grievance tomorrow (non-union) and have retained an attorney. This HUPspital won't pay us if we have to stay over, even though we must document when we leave.I think it's time to notify wage and hour as well as FMLA agencies.Thanks for listening! Any advice?

Wow, sounds like a mess.

If you followed the policies, you should be fine.
Go way over her head if you have to. Good luck!

Yeah, that sounds like a disaster. Never having even heard of a situation like that before (IRL), I've no advice. Sorry! But good luck and let us know what happens.

So you aren't paid for the time you stay over? Definitely against the law.

I agree with Jodi on this one. If you have policies in place and you can prove you followed them, then go over the Boss's head and fight for your cause.

Start a paper trial of your own by writing letters to HR and anyone else who reels power over your boss. Explain what happened and keep copies of all of your paperwork. Go through the hospital's appeals process, and if you don't get satisfaction, get a lawyer. They can't fire you if you’re following the rules spelled out in their own policy book. HR isn’t going to want to deal with a nasty lawsuit.

Update! Level 1 greivance heard today by the clinical co-ordinator. Denied! No surprize there! Next it goes to the divisional DON, whose the head case! However, I have been getting a ton of support from my co-workers! Everyone is in agreement that this termination was not only not justified, it's crazy!
Even a nurse the DDON trusts told her she was baseless in her charge! YEAH!!
If you are so inclined, a few prayers, please. Even though I know I'm right, it ain't easy!

I'm sure we are all either been in a simular situation or have seen it happen, and feel for you.

First stay professional, as all documentation can be used against you, including your posts on here(it is unwise to call them 'snakes' or 'Osama' on a public post).

In hind sight it might have been better to get the nurse to sign her own name, but if policy says you did the right thing (I see nothing wrong with it as you initialed it as well) then you need a copy of the policy of the hospital ASAP included on it needs to be the date of update (you don't want them updating it now and changing it to make you wrong) so you might need to print off a new copy, highlight the relevant passage and bookmark it for easy reference.

Take the complaint to the next level up from you, if this the the person you have an issue with, then go to a horizontal manager for clarification, but be careful of going to the top person first.

Prepare (and write down) what you are going to say to various questions and take it in to the interviews, read from it if you must (this will stop you getting too flusted under pressure)

Point 1 (original post) is important as it shows her error, but I'd forget about point 2 as it seems to be hear-say.

Contact your union, and registration body NOW to get support from them, as they are the ones who can fight for you.

Here's the latest!
The second step was denied by the DDON-the crazy one! No surprize there!
More of my co-workers have called me with tales of big mistakes they have made at work, which the heir apparent and even the DDON where made aware of. No discipline given out! My peers are afraid to come forward at work...they are afraid of retribution! But, they are willing to go public, speak to my lawyer, and answer questions in court! They feel a public forum will protect them where as the Hospital will discipline, punish, terminate, etc. instead of dealing with the issues! What has happened to nursing?
I should have my level 3 hearing by Christmas. So far, my un-employment has been approved. No one at un-employment feels my termination is justified.
Please keep the prayers and positive thoughts coming, I need them!
I tried posting 3 times last night, but my computer hick-upped, or something, and all 3 posts disappearred!

My third step hearing is tomorrow.The Pharmacy Director is hearing it.I hope this is a good omen, pharmacy screws up so much that hopefully he'll see the nonsense in this!

Sorry it took me so long to respond, but Things did not go well in the third step hearing! The hearing officer tried to say that my greivance was just about signatures being missing. Obviously, he did not read my complaint! Also, my co-ordinator tried to say that I've had numerous administrative warnings and other suspensions! NEVER!!! She flat out lied and I called her on it. She did retract her statement.I had document after document backing up my point, but the hearing officer just wanted to discuss "the event". I said if "the event" was why we were there, we wouldn't need to be there! He was unaware of the slanderous e-mails my co-ordinator had written about me as well as my repeated attempts to contact HR and there lack of response. He did agree to take and reveiw all my info. However, it was just a dog and pony show! I will hear the outcome after the first of the year. The only benefit to giving me my job back is when we do go to court, the hospital will have the weight of saying they returned me to full status vs. not re-instating me.
My attorney and I have begun to work with an employment lawyer. I am going public and going forward. I have to! This craziness has to stop, in Nursing! Once the public hears what's going on, hopefully, it will change people's perspective of hospitals!

I think I would take them all the way to getting my job back then tell them to put where the sun doesn't shine. Just to prove the point. Unfortunately, at-will hospitals can pretty much hang you any way they please. Good luck.
