Hey all! Just a quick question? I will be starting a teaching position next week (yikes!) and would like some input as to what makes for an interesting class/lecture? What are some things that your instructors have done that really made the class interesting for you?? I've recently graduated so I remember what it is like to be a student and have some ideas of my own but welcome any and all suggestions!

I always groaned when they announced that we were going to do a group activity, but those days always turned out to go by the fastest.

Anything that gets the class involved instead of just sitting there furiously taking notes. I don't know how much content you could fit into such a format, though.

Games are always fun. It would take a lot of time to initially set up, but something like jeopardy would keep people engaged in the discussion.

I agree with Geena about group activities and games, which are particularly useful during times like post lunch when energy levels drop. Also I think it is always useful to use real patient scenarios to describe problems / conditions and to get people to work on solutions.

If you use things like powerpoint, then keep slides simple and to the point. Death by powerpoint is no ones idea of fun.

Don't have 'Fill the gap' powerpoint presentations unless you acknowledge that words are missing (and please allow enough space), and allow time for everyone to write them in. There is nothing worse than missing out on the information.

Get drawing!! Images in books are good, a simplified drawing which the students can remember and draw easily from memory is better.

Analogy Analogy Analogy. How does it work in lay terms. Trains are always a common one in cardiac systems. Remember "you don't know a topic unless you can explain it to your grandmother"!!

All topics have a "Oh I get it!" sentence. It is usually one sentence which suddenly makes everything go together.

Stories. Describe clinical experiences and how they apply to a topic from your own experience.

Stick to the topic and make sure you answer the objectives that have been set.

Take your lectures serious when you give them. If people are turning up late then LOCK THE DOOR! after missing an important lecture people will see that you are there to teach and if they are not committed to their study by arriving on time then they miss out. Mobile phones, if they ring ask for them and answer them with "sorry but .... is in a lecture, they will call you back at their next break", you will find everyone suddenly turns of their phones. Make it clear that if they have a need to be contactable during your lecture, then they need to notify you and sit near the exit.

(on a personal note) If they same student keeps giving personal opinions in the form of a question, don't allow them to do it, it annoys the rest of the class.

This might seem obvious. But lab sessions are better if they are structured as to what is to be achieved. We are now getting senarios and have to perform the tests etc which are required, along with the typical medication (we need to know the categories, not drugs by themselves). So last week it was Cardio so we ended up doing ECGs etc.
