Where's Everyone At?

Sheesh - I've been so busy I can't keep my head on straight. I worked a 21 hr shift the other day and I'm still recovering. I feel like I've been hit by a mack truck. Of course, that might have something to do with the fact that I am also fighting a sinus infection. Nah - couldn't be that.

So what have you all been up to lately?

Wow, sorry you're feeling bad. You worked a 21 hour shift? Let me guess, you were working a double and then your relief nurse didn't show up, so you were mandated to stay over.

And people wonder why nurses are leaving the profession.

I read your blog of that shift.. that must have been brutal (and a bit thrilling at the same time).

Your blog inspires me and also provides incredible realism of nursing. As a student nurse I am concerned for my future as a nurse, especially since I'm interested in ER.

Do you think more staffing will make a difference? What's your opinion of new grads going into critical care areas?

I think more staff would definitely make a difference. We had multiple sick calls that night and there was no one else to fill the shift. It wasn't exactly "mandated", but who else was going to come in, eh? I just said sure out of pure stupidity.

I think new grads in critical care areas are a mixed bag. There are pros and cons. I think nurses need a good start on a general med/surg floor to ingraine the basics into their brains. It's the repetive exposure that facilitates increased learning.

BUT...........

I've also seen some amazing new grads go through ER or ICU internships and are able to function just fine when they are through the internship. It really depends on the person.

I'm glad I started on a general surgical floor. The repeated exposure to things and just basic nursing principle was exactly what I needed.

I wish you luck in whatever area you choose.

I hope my blog doesn't ever scare you away though! LOL

Haven't scared me yet!

Some of your stories are daunting, for sure, but it reminds me how much nurses are needed in that area, and I really could see myself working there!

Perhaps I'm being morbid, but I'm definitely a trauma junkie, but also like the quick visits, and that there is never the same day twice.

I look forward to reading more!

Yikes 21 hours...that's no fun, recently I ended up doing a 17 hour shift...boy oh boy did that kill me.
But you feel a HUGE responsibility to not only your coworkers but the patients as well because you know that if you don't stay no one will be there to take care of them.
I've been working on a general surgery floor for the last 2 years but have kinda been forced to leave in a way, my manager has lost her trust in me becuase of multiple issues piling up on me and my work going down hill(long story-maybe another day I'll write about it)especially on days where we were short staffed/crazy beyond belief! I love it there and the people I work with but it certainly isn't the greatest situation anymore to work there so time for a change. :dontknow: what's next
So kinda need prayers/thoughts the like to help me find a new job:)
Keep up the good work folks!

RunningNurse,

I do not know if you have found your new job, so, as you requested, I have prayed for you. Will you please let us know how things are working out? Thanks.

Joy

OOPS! Just now read your 2/14 post in which you said something about a new job. Sorry! Oh, well, I suppose neither you nor God mind that I asked Him to bless you. Onward... right?
