What were they thinking?
A sexy, handsome movie star who is involved in a motorcycle accident comes into your hospital for treatment, so what do you do? Are you tempted to look at his chart to see what's going on? Apparently some people working at the hospital that took care of George Clooney did just that, and now they are paying the consequences of their actions. It’s confession time: Would you have been tempted to peek to George’s chart, and what do you think should happened to the staff members who broke patient confidentiality by looking at George’s personal medical information?

I saw this on CNN today! The hospital staff got suspended for peeking at his chart.

I would've definitely not looked at his chart or anyone else's whether they're a movie star or just someone off the street. If that person is not my patient or my nurse's patient, I would not peek...that information is confidential!

"WCBS-TV in New York reported last night that as many as 40 employees, including doctors, were suspended without pay, accused of accessing Clooney's medical records and possibly providing information to the media, a violation of federal law."

I don't get what the hospital staff wanted to do...provide the media his information for money? Say "I read George Clooney's chart?" I really am curious why they peeked at his chart, sure, it's tempting, but come on now...were they expecting to find something shocking and tell the media about it?

Awful nice of this particular patient to be so kind as to not want the nurses to be suspended, but I kinda feel there's got to be some kind of precident here.

Wouldn't even be tempted.

I'd be tempted to look at him, but his chart? Not unless I was directly involved in his care.

I'm with you guys. I wouldn't even be tempted to look at the chart. However.... point me to the curtain he's behind!!!! ;)

I can see you ladies now: Hello, Mr. Clooney, we are here to get you your therapeutic backrub.

geenaRN 10-11-2007 04:42 PM

Back rub?

Don't nurses do therapeutic bed baths anymore? :highfive:

Nurse Stella 10-11-2007 08:02 PM

This gives a whole new meaning to the term "Comfort Measures"! :curtsey:

Gotta go with Geena on this one, I'd think after a terrible motorcycle accident he might have some road rash and a soothing bath would be just the thing!

On a serious note though, however tempted one might be, the line was crossed and retribution needed to be distributed. George Clooney may be a great guy and say these employees shouldn't be suspended probably because he has nothing to hide. But the fact remains that IF he had things in his chart (like a past medical history) that he didn't want anyone to know about then he, like me, has the right to his privacy.

Think about this ladies and gentlemen, let's say you were admitted to the hospital you work at with a diagnosis of ( fill in the blank ) Would you want anyone to know?
