Default Night duty and public holidays

Hello to all you night owls out there.

I was wondering how your hours were worked out over a public holiday. The reason for this is that over the past year I have ended up working the "morning" of a public holiday and not the "evening". the company I work for pays the nurse working the evening of the public holiday double pay for the full 11 hours.
My gripe with this is as we work 19:00 - 07:00 I as the morning nurse have worked 7 hours of the public holiday and my co-worker working the evening only works 5 hours.

At my previous company we were paid per hour worked so the public holiday would be split.

I was just wondering how it worked for you guys.

A lot of wheeling and dealing happens on my unit when it comes to working the holidays. Everyone is required to sign up for at least one major holiday, and the sign up sheet goes up months in advance. A nurse must work either Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years. By the time the holidays roll around, nurses start trading shifts. It always works out because some people want to work all of the holidays. Full time and part time people get paid double time and a half if the work the holiday, and they get one shift of regular pay if they don't work the holiday. PRN people get holiday pay only if they work the holiday.

It sounds like you are getting a raw deal. Maybe you will have better luck next year.

Sounds like you are getting ripped off. In our hospital the holiday starts like 11p the night before the holiday and ends at
11p of the holiday. Any time worked in those hours are 1 1/2 x
so if you worked 1900 to 0700 night before you would get 4 hours OT since the holiday starts at 11p.
A new rule at our hospital is that you must "physically work" 40 hours in a week to get OT. Therefore, if you have holiday pay or PTO (vac) and you work an 8 hour shift extra, you do not get OT for that 8 hours because you did not physically work the holiday or PTO hours. I really think this is wrong since you "earned" those holiday/PTO hours by how many hours you work in a year.
They always find a way to get out of paying any more than they have to.
Maybe you need to find a better employer. Good luck with that.

At the hospital in which I work, you must work both the Eve and the Day of either Christmas or New Year's. The holiday for Christmas is the actual day (for night shift that would be the Eve) and for New Year's the holiday starts at 2pm New Year's Eve and runs to 2 pm New Year's day. If you are a 12 hour person, you get 12 holiday plus time and a half if you actually work the holiday. So...if you work the holiday that equals 2 1/2 times the normal pay rate. If you are scheduled off that day, you only get 12 hours holiday pay. For part timers and per diems, you only get holiday pay if you actually work the holiday. I hope that made sense.

The eight hour people work every other holiday eve and that is considered the holiday. So, nights gets holiday pay from 11-7, days from 7-3, and evenings from 3-11 and then the holiday is over. However, the twelve hour people (like me) have a rotation of every third completely off, every third on the night of, and every third the eve on. For example, I worked Thanksgiving night starting at 7pm and didn't get paid the holiday pay. I worked Christmas eve 7p-7a and was paid 12 hours holiday pay, and I was off all of new years (eve and day). Our contract specifies that it goes by what your shift is...when I worked Christmas eve I was getting paid holiday pay from 7pm on, whereas the evening shift people didn't get paid holiday pay until the next day at 3pm. I wish we didn't have that rotation, because when you're "off", meaning not on the eve, it feels like your actually working the holiday (like at Thanksgiving when I had to leave dinner early to get to work)...clear as mud, huh?

We work 7 nights on and seven nights off and it just so happened that change over occured on a public holiday three times last year with me being the one going off duty.

I find it interesting that people are endind up with 2 1/2 the normal rate. I think I need to emigrate!!

I will be discussing this with my manager and see what develops.

I can't follow the pay rates here sometimes cos different holidays attract different rates.
However, they pay for the actual hours worked, so if you start 11pm on a holiday eve and work til 7am, you get 7 hours at that holiday rate and the first one at standard.

What I find most odd is in Australia you get double pay for working the Queen's birthday holiday. In the UK, the Queen's birthday isn't even a public holiday!

Our hospital is rather interesting.

The "holiday" begins and ends at 2400. Only the hours worked during that 24 hour period are paid at holiday pay.

So...if half your shift if before the holiday and half is on the holiday, you only get holiday pay for half the shift.

It's really amazing how it all works out every year. Some nurses want certain holidays. Our only requirement is that we work either Christmas or New Years (day). By including the "Eves" in the holiday planning, we accomodate everyone.

Having said that - I worked "Christmas" and got home at 0730 that morning. That was the only holiday I had to work this year.

I prefer them off!

Those family times seem more important as you get older don't they? I have to agree with Kim and MyOwnWoman.

More and more people in the UK seem to take annual leave to make the longest possible holiday known to man at Christmas / New Year(2 weeks in some cases). They think you mighty odd if you actually work somewhere that can't shut down. Mind you of course they'd find it pretty strange if the local hospital closed!
