Default Who is afraid of nursing workplace evaluation?

In our workplace as a nurse, its OK for our administrators to rate and judge our performance, one nurse i know was evaluated poorly due to her personal cleanliness! Its damn personal. They can evaluate us and tell us what is needed to be changed.

So why can't we evaluate our nursing workplace and tell them what is needed for them to change? Most of the administrators here in this so called NURSING VOICES are against nursing evaluation and this is probably why...

1. They are part of bullying nurses who want to be in power without questions.
2. They are bad nursing administrators who don't want to be evaluated, because they have something to hide like they are discriminating, rude and condescending just like some here, im for sure.
3. They probably own hosptial stocks and doesnt care about nursing workplace.
4. Only bad nursing workplaces are afraid of evaluation, if your workplace is good it will definitely get a good rating in general.
AND WHAT IS NURSING VOICES FORUM? IS IT THE REAL VOICES OF NURSES? ASK MOST OF THE NURSES ABOUT THEIR WORKPLACE.IS THIS NURSING VOICES?

Amandatic1,

We welcomed you to Nursing Voices and invited you to share your nursing experiences. This is a forum that is run by nurses for nurses. All of the people who post on the forum are nurses. Some of us are managers now, but in the main those who post here are still clinical nurses. None of us are frightened of evaluation because we know the difference between good nursing care and bad.

You joined Nursing voices predominantly to get people to visit a particular web site. Even when you were found out we still gave you the benefit of the doubt. But the post above is unpleasant and vindictive.

It is not us who identify whether our work place is a good one in terms of patient care, it is the patients themselves. Perhaps you should find your way to a patient forum?

By the way Nursing Voices welcomes nurses from all over the world. I myself am from the UK. Here no one owns stocks as our hospitals are owned by the National Health Service which is within the state sector. Therefore I have no axe to grind with you but actually I do not like your approach.

Julie, hear hear!

Personally, I find it particularly obnoxious if someone tries to tell me my motivation for doing/not doing something

I suppose I should be thankful she didn't call us fascists (hmmm, although accusing us of all being bad managers I suppose comes close).

I too work for the gov'ment. Last I checked, can't own stock in those hospitals

Well, if she wasn't keeping up with personal hygiene... then... I believe a poor evaluation would be in order.

You have shown quite a lot of passion for good workplace environments. Such passion, when focused in a healthy manner, can help drive our profession toward increasing excellence in both practice and purpose.

I want to comment on your words which I have quoted above.

A. We can, should, and do evaluate our respective workplaces. In my place of employment this is done both formally and informally. The informal takes place everyday as we problem-solve together. The formal takes place in meetings which bring together senior and middle management, staff nurses, and physicians. I imagine your place of employment has similar avenues by which to address concerns.

B. As I see it, the purpose of Nursing Voices is being met in that this is a forum designed and used to foster communication between nurses. Secondarily,while there may be disagreement among managers or administrators about what constitutes good utilization of resources, I sincerely doubt that any manager/administrator is "against nursing evaluations."

C. Having a "good rating in general" is a commendable goal, one that every employee wishes for their hospital. Whether or not the evaluation site you refer to is the avenue through which this status can be accurately assessed is a question that needs to be answered more fully. As you are aware, attaining and maintaining excellence in service is a complex and multifaceted issue.

Now as someone who has been in healthcare for a long time, as someone who admires the loyality you apparently have for the people who designed the evaluation site, and as someone who admires the passion you seem to have for what you think is right I encourage you to continue posting to Nursing Voices. Please do consider, however, the limitations of asynchronous posting. The written word alone does not give the reader the vital information that is gained through the tone, cadence, volume, and body language of two people meeting face to face.

Finally - and for whatever my opinion is worth - I pick up from your writing a deep sense of disenfranchisement. I wonder how you might be able to use that anger and alienation to further the cause of excellence in the provision of nursing care?

Well stated, Julie. I do not own stock in any hospital, and I am not in management. I am a bedside nurse. No one here wants to offend you, but I think your anger is misplaced.

Wow - how to respond?

Well, I think the way I give a facility a bad evaluation is with my feet! But what I consider a "bad" facility may be just right for someone else!

For the record, I'm not a manager, I don't own a single stock in anything (although I should own stock in Starbucks and Apple, lord knows I missed the boat on both of those), I do bedside nursing and Nursing Voices can only be the voice of the nurses who post here, including you!

Despite all that, the tone of the post is very disheartening, to say the least. I'm with Joy on this one. I sense much passion and more than a little anger.

Ventilating anger is okay, taking it out on the hosts/moderators of the venue that is giving you a place to ventilate is insulting.

And that is directly from my nursing voice.

I think one of the best things that we as members of the Nursing Voices forum have shown on this thread is that we can have an open, honest and level headed debate.

The fact is many of us here have been around the block a little. We know the difference between good nursing care and poor and we can express it in a good natured way while getting the passion we feel for our profession over to each others.

An online evaluation site? Why would we need such a thing?
